Dandicat doesn"t want a happy ending on purpose. Violence in the novel is detached, no exaggeration, neutral. Moves from violence in haiti to bureaucratic violence in america. He dies because they don"t give him proper care. Not the cruelty of people wanting to hurt him, cruelty of people feeing indifferent. Haiti is seen as a dangerous place, americans don"t want these people coming. Dandicat used the legal system to find out what happened to her uncle. He has vomited and urinated on himself because he hasn"t had his meds. The medics think he is faking a seizure. The white doctor who went to school for this accuses him of faking. He dies alone without any family, being treated cruelly by government. When the policeman waits outside where the father dies the family wonders if this is standard. The policeman is making sure there was no foul play.
