The book is favoured by mainstream american newspapers. Laila lalami thinks that wearing a hijab is not helping. Why are the young people going back to islam. Why are they going back to support the violence. Young people with lots of opportunity turning their backs on school etc. People choose to read holy scriptures in certain ways. There is nothing in the quran that specifically says that muslim women have to cover themselves. Lalami is fairly neutral in her writing, but it seems that she is critical of muslim youth. Things have changed so much that there are such sharp boundaries for crossing. One country is very poor, different religion, while spain is is very different, rich and no specified religion. Realistic book in the sense that no ones mind is clear about what they want. The parents always question if they parented properly. Ideas that someone else is doing well when you are not.
