Tele-screens other than these, not a very technological/high-tech world (elevator never works, electricity isn"t always on, horse ploughs work the fields, etc. Thought-police could watch you whenever but you never know when. Not a highly technological society only technology is winstons office. Possibility of being watched which will be influencial on behaviour bc of the way the cells were set up. Both styles of dystopia have pessimistic views on the future. One aspect that characterizes the dystopia is that the society was made up by someone right to the level of poverty. Since they have been purposely placed its unlikely for society to change so what makes this world distinct is the lack of hope. In the midst oh hardship happiness is still a possibility woman signing while she hangs diapers.
