Food and land part 2: food production: global. 80% of global population relies on industrialized agriculture. Only 38% of land is considered arable. Technological advances have contributed to dramatic increases in all three. -14 plant species, 8 terrestrial animals supply 90% of global caloric intake. Wheat, rice, corn, (>50% calories) 2/3 of population rely on this. Planting the same thing depletes the soil. 1 billion do not have enough food to maintain good health. 1 billion people confront health issues associated with an excess of food. People should be having just under 2500 calories, many countries are way above this, africa near or below it. Although more countries are increasing their food consumption, they are still malnourished. Food consumption is increasing as well as an increase of people (exponential growth) 50"s developed countries focus / agricultural usage. More useable land; higher yields/unit area(cross breeding!!
