What is a family: our definition has changed significantly in the last 100 years, used to be very strict, heterosexual, structural (dating formally then engagement then marriage). Anything outside of this was not socially acceptable: used to prioritized having children & reproducing, more people take longer to get married now & higher rates of cohabitation. Today, families are diverse & are accepted socially and legally. What is the family: varied depending on historical period & location. Legal what rights we have access to. Who has rights in medical situations, who we share our assets with. Defined as an adult with offspring either blood or adopted. Also defined as 2 adults who are common law or married that must be dwelling in the same household. Social or normative reflect ideas of the time. We pass on patterns of behavior through our family: theoretical not fact based, just ideas.
