The personality of a director comes to the fore precisely because of the barriers he struggles against (exalting the myth of the struggling artist creative genius ) Where the director has real control is on the set, so the art of cinema is tonly the art of style. Economic, political, social, and cultural forces that shape the work are not considered. Auteurism is dependent on value judgements: good/bad, superior/inferior. One must see all of the work of a director to appreciate a single work by the director, cross-referencing is crucial.
