This region is home to the provinces of alberta, saskatchewan, and manitoba. It is commonly referred to as the prairies however the northern portions of each province have a landscape dominated by boreal forest. The southern half of the region is heavily agricultural. The climate is dry with extreme temperature differences between summer and winter. Oil is the most important natural resource and is found in the western part of the region. Tourism is highest in the rocky mountain foothills. There is a high indigenous population and relatively high eastern european population. Alberta: princess louise caroline alberta was the 4th daughter of queen vitoria and price albert. Saskatchewan: derived from a cree word meaning swift flowing water . Manitoba: derived from a cree word meaning lake of the prairies . Before 1869: land division was based on m tis settlement patterns. Lots were narrow and provided frontage along rivers.
