Levels of economic activity: primary economic activity: extraction of raw materials, secondary economic activity: conversion/processing/refining the material into product, tertiary economic activity: provision of services, quaternary economic: collection, processing and distribution of information. Not really possible to tell the difference between tertiary and quaternary anymore. Immigrants: canals for export, grist mills along rivers, moving things along our rivers, local consumption increased as population grew, local demand for agricultural production. 9 million acres of cropland in ontario in 2006. Things beyond the farmers control: risk of economic disaster- mad cow disease, etc, subsidies and tariffs, environmental change took much rain, not enough, too hot, etc. International trade agree- stuff going across the border. Farm cash receipts by province: almost the same % as saskatchewan, we are making more money than we probably expect on agriculture, while saskatchewan"s main source of income is agriculture.
