Small land area: high concentration of population, highly urbanized population. Corporate control biggest corporations locate their hq in the heartlands. People, power, money, economic activity are concentrated in the heartland. There is not room left (like in the gta, for the primary activities like agriculture) in heartlands like toronto. Cities with diversified economies means they are resilient, they have more than one thing to offer to sustain their economy. Capacity for innovation and change - need to be able to change, react, implement new technology, etc. Scattered population depends on physical structure: more rural population. Primary activities dominate high tech mining, trades jobs. Towns tend to be purpose built like how there is an ore and they make a mine.
