Heartland Process
- Federal government might have an interest to create a strong, industrial economy in a certain region

- Once people settle in and clear the land, they use it for agriculture + other commodities (food, lumbar,
water, etc.) just to get by. Once threshold population is reached, people can start selling things to other
people. Economies of Scale people specialize in certain goods or services to sell to others.
- Economies of Scale/Specialization leads to increase in economic activity which allows for growth
(communities are built, towns, shops, etc.) which attracts more growth. As more specialized stores are
built (excluding grocery stores), they are right next to each other (Economies of Agglomeration).

at the resources there allows for entrepreneurship.

Ontario as a Heartland?
- Ontario is the biggest Heartland in Canada Goes from Windsor to Quebec
- There are other (smaller) Heartlands in Canada
- We are interested in South Central Ontario and the Golden Horseshoe as Heartlands
- From 1940-1975, Ontario prospered and had a diverse economy + power
- Eooi aageet of Caada liked to Otario’s prosperity/Otario supported y a strog,
federal go’t Fed. go’t always acts in the best interest of Ontario (other provinces get jealous so they
try to get more power but Ontario blocks this from happening as they have the most seats in the house)
- Ontario has always been in favour of NAFTA because of the expanded access to market it provides
- Ontario has had rifts w/the rest of Canada (our interests may not be compatible)
- Is heartland a strong enough term for Ontario? (somewhere in between a heartland + a region state).
- Ontario prominent on a continental scale (population and economic wise by 2035, GTA will be the
3rd largest metropolis in North America and we will make more cars than any other jurisdiction in North
America)
- Ontario needs more continental orientation (b/c everybody in Ontario oriented to the U.S. right now?)
- South Ontario, NYC, LA and Texas are densely populated
- GDP of Canada + Manufacturing Sales Ontario (50%) then Quebec (Quebec is 2nd closest to America)
- Due to free-trade, most of the things we export (80-85%) are to U.S. and not to other provinces!
- We export mostly autos, and then gold
- Exports from Ontario are expected to increase
- Otario = ost opetitie proie ad it’s is the 3rd largest hub for global business in America (after
NY and California)
