Measure of the kinetic energy of molecules. Measured in degrees c, kelvin, or f. Form of energy due to the motion of atoms. Depends on volume, temperature, and heat capacity. The temperature of the atmosphere depends on the 4 heat flows which vary in time and space o o o. Radiant heat - heat transmitted by electromagnetic waves (e. g. net radiation) Latent heat - heat resulting from a change in phase (e. g. evaporation) Sensible heat - heat resulting from a temperature change - moves via convection: ground heat - heat moving into and out of earth"s surface that moves via conduction. Rise of temperature during day and fall at night: min temp right after sunrise. Temperature varies with seasons warming in summer and cooling in winter. Reflect insolation (sun) and keep long waves in the atmosphere. Land heats up and cools down more quickly than water.
