San andreas fault- people know there"s a fault but decide to live there anyways: accept. Passive attitude (little can be done to reduce impacts) Hazard are often viewed as acts of god. Action is taken to reduce impacts, there is reactive response and some preparation. Flooding events, snow and wind related hazards: change. Radical action may be taken (move away or change land use) Many years of research on public responses to risk, no comprehensive theory to explain why apparently minor risk events sometimes produce massive public reaction. People are too scared about the risk to use nuclear energy (even though it"s a very clean type of energy) Hazards that are not likely to be serious but typically evoke much public reaction.
