Document Summary
Mithridati(c)um, the antidote used by king mithridates vi of pontus (1st c. According to galen all nerves are supplied with psychic pneuma (see galen"s physiology) that is sent from the brain to the spinal cord. The face is supplied by nerves deriving from the brain (i. e. the cranial nerves) The parts below the neck are supplied by nerves that grow out of the spinal cord at different levels. Thus, if the spinal cord is completely severed transversely all parts of the body below the incision lose sensation and movement. If a conditon arises at any level of the spinal cord, only those parts below the damage to the spinal cord lose sensation and motion, while the face remains unaffected. If the face is paralysed together with the body it is to be concluded that the condition is located in the brain and not in the spinal cord.
