Pathology Lecture Part 2
Overview
1. Models of Pathology
2. Supernatural Causes of Disease
Sacred disease vs Socratic science of medicine
3. Invasion by Living Organisms
Examples: Bubonic plague, Cholera, Smallpox and AIDS
4. Problems with Positivism
Models of Pathology
top two are the most dominant (medicine focuses on organism- the sick individual)
ecological:
tolerating and accepting the illness as a fact of life
not pursuing cures for that kind of diseases (eg. Death, aging)
second two the most important in terms of classifying actual diseases
ontological:
something outside of your body makes you sick
often a different disease or organism
physiological:
you are the cause of your own illness
- helps explain how your body has made you sick
altered anatomy:
determines that you are sick by seeing the change in your body -through an xray
or blood tests
- finding some physical lesion
- lesion = the physical change (bacteria in the cell, scaring of the liver, tumor in the pancreas)
- looks for something identifiable that is then labelled as the cause
nosology:
based on your symptoms
- not about the physical cause identified but rather the physical symptoms combined
together
- creating a portrait of the virus- a family tree
- initially used due to the lack of technology available
- trying to come up with a list of symptoms

Document Summary
Scientists still lack the weapons they need to fight the invading diseases. Microscopic war way mankind is being attacked and what we have on hand to defend ourselves. Ebola- all medical science can do is isolate the sick. Fleming discovers penicillin in 1928 without it there would be half of as many people living in the world today. Studied infections and the bacteria that caused them. Bacteria causes the spread of diseases among humans. Overview: models of pathology, supernatural causes of disease. Sacred disease vs socratic science of medicine: invasion by living organisms. Examples: bubonic plague, cholera, smallpox and aids: problems with positivism. Supernatural causes (duffin, 70-71) even the same disease. Disease serves a moral, spiritual or pedagogical function. Germs discovered using microscopes starting in the late 1800s. Louis pasteur was a chemist working on fermentation processes in food (developed method of killing germs in milk: pasteurization: filtering out bacteria through the use of heat.
