What is pathology: the science of the causes and effects of diseases; in medicine, a system of knowledge used to draw conclusions about illness, where physiology is concerned with normal" functions, pathology is concerned with. Illness demands logical" explanations: we want an explanation for suffering, sociocultural ideas of sin/blame (seen in many societies up until the early modern period, but still continues today, scientific/material ideas of structure, function, heredity, contagion, and risk. Justification: therapeutic rationales arise from scientific formulations of the problem, pathology is used to prove reasonableness of a diagnosis or course of action, eg. autopsies were being used for retrospective diagnosis as early as the. 13th century: this is partly why access to bodies become so important for either justifying or negating the treatment options used while the patient was still alive.
