History 1401E Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Alistair Horne
Document Summary
When compared to the british, it was seen that the french had no staff , nor did they pay attention to military ranks. Due to this, they followed the revolutionary forces" ideas, mimicking their enemies in the indochinese war"s techniques, such as guerrilla warfare. In the early parts of the war against algeria, france began to make the same mistakes they had made in the indochina war. The legion of france had always had a special relationship with algeria. The french army was spoilt: they had lavish foods and mobile brothels that followed them wherever they army went. Similarly, napoleon had canned goods and canteen girls (prostitutes of sorts) follow him and his army around as they conquered europe: however, discipline was rigid and the army was often punished using forms of almost- torture. Men would be forced to their knees, sitting in the beating hot sun for hours at a time.
