The first reading on george canning"s address on the king"s message respecting. Portugal is talking about how it will be england"s duty to interfere if spain attacks. Portugal due to the treaty england has with portugal. Canning states that if england did not help portugal, england would be abandoning the ideas of national faith and national honour, as england would not be following its agreement that was instated with portugal. He states people are free to go to war but when two countries have treaty it is their duty to defend one another. He stresses the idea of national pride stating that if the war is not stopped it will spread into a mass of national degradation. In the second reading general ideas address how new ideas arise when old ones are lost or are no longer effective. It illustrates how napoleon brought forth new ideas to all of europe helping to create a sort of clarity.
