Document Summary

French-indo china war initially part colonial conflict / part civil war. Many of the french allies were indigenous vietnamese soldiers. War did not go well for the vietminh at the beginning. Had to leave major cities, flee to the countryside, etc. Only had loose control of the countryside. All the tenuous gains they had made by the end of wwii pretty much ceased to function. But french could not completely capitalize on the gains they had made and fully demolish the vietnamese. Didn"t have the troop strength they required many were dealing with the post- war situation in france, germany, north africa, etc. Looked to the usa for support though they were wary about the colonialism of the french: french emphasized the communism side to get them on board. After the war there were two views marxist-leninism and liberal. ; very utopian vision to do this, had to destroy the liberal capitalist.
