In relation to the emergence of the printing press. Elite culture= official culture, art produced for and by the rich. Elite culture draws on most valuable resources available, talents of most successful producers of cultural materials. Demonstrate authority of those who support it hegemonic aspect elites determine the value of the cultural artifacts. Creation of art for the creation of power eg. monuments. Folk culture represents ordinary working people, intensely local. Relies on readily available techniques and materials from a particular location. Not focused on protecting the ideals of any particular interest group. Can subvert authority created by elite culture eg. the cake walk way african americans walked an imitation elites thought they were controlling what they didn"t know was this was africans way of mocking their owners. Is inclusive creates cultural artifacts which can be consumed by anybody. Pop culture is a modern off shoot of folk culture.
