Excess: colourful images/loud music/wild dances, time of affluence. Hedonism: gender barriers beginning to break down, women gaining access to the public sphere, classes begin to break down. All of these are a far cry from the victorian era: underneath these victorian exterior there were tensions at work. These tensions allows the jazz age to occur. Middle and upper class worked hard to distinguish themselves from the lower classes: through: Created public and private amusements which fit their hierarchical perception of culture: determined what respectable men and women could do together. Gender relations significant double standard: men public sphere business, politics. Success in public sphere was measured by ability to climb up the social ladder. Required self discipline, self reliance, will power, and hard work. This is what determined victorian notions of masculinity: women the private sphere within the home. Where women could instill all the values of success in her children.
