The Beatles at JFK – Beginning of British Invasion
- February 7, 1964 – Beatles arrive to huge fan greeting in America
o Over 5000 fans showed up to greet them
o 200 + members of press
- Ed Sullivan Show – 73 million viewers
- British invasion – transition to harder/louder rock music
- Rock in US: emerged against abundance
- Rock in UK: emerged against decline (London was the economic capital of world in 19th century)
Post War England and the Roots of British Rock n Roll
- Baby boomers were born into war that largely affected them
o Tangible impacts – cities were destroyed
- Both World Wars weakened British empire
- Damaged economy and industry
- Continued osterity after the war (DIFFERENT than US abundance)
- Stratified class structure in UK – important to them
- Under all this tension rock emerged
American Servicemen in England
- American presence in WWII – brought over music/films
- Inundated by US culture **start the expansion
- All arriving at once (blues, rock, R&B) in Britain

Skiffle Music – 1954 – 1958 (by 1960 this was rock)
- Country, folk, rock music
- Originally performed by 4 black, impoverished men

- Played early American folk ballads
- Rock Island Line – hit song

The Beatles
- Demonstrate how tensions in Britain laid itself out
- Product of postwar Britain
- Individual stories:
- John Lennon: both parents abandoned him

o Mom came back into his life in high school
o 1958: she was killed by a drunk cop in a car

- George Harrison: good upbringing
o Rebelled for the sake of it

- John Lennon – made his own band: The Quarr Me
o McCartney and Harrison joined
- 1959: Skiffle band becoming more rock
o They saw Buddy Holly and were inspired
o The Quarry Men → The Moondogs → The Beatles (like The Crickets)
- Went to Hamburg, Germany
o Four man format
- End of 1960 – returned to Liverpool – founded at Cavern Club by Brian Epstein
- Initially, they were doing cover songs
o More intensity born out of their desperation – music as their way out (Rock n Roll

- 1962: began to record their own music

Beatlemania Takes Off
- Brian Epstein – manager – helps them (came from a family of money and elite)

- Sexual, rebellious (opposite of Beatles)

The Animals
- From Newcastle-on-Tyne
