The bow street runners, professional but not state-controlled group of men who worked alongside the metropolitan police from 1829-39. By the end of the 19th century, there was a sort of affection towards policing. The victorian era was class ridden; police men would have been of upper working class and middle class, formal schooling would have been limited. Victorian police were not as concerned with murder as they were with property crime. Society was becoming less violent by 19th century, more inclined to engage in debate than in physical con ict.
