Begins 476 ad - the end of the roman empire, Others say 395 because romans were putting puppets on european thrones. Others argue 250-476 - the late roman empire. The end of the middle ages is a topic of debate. Some historians say middle ages is never open because western culture is a result of middle ages. Romans were not all homogenous, they had different group. Western roman empire - latinised, romans conquered it, far superior due to technology etc. Greeks were superior in knowledge and wealth than romans and romans looked up to them. Greeks and romans looked up to each other. Eastern roman empire - far more industrialized and urbanized, could trade with. Russia and china, financially in better shape when barbarians hit. Barbarians set up mini empires of countries - 1300 countries we know today. Lower countries very rich but northern countries not as rich. Dark age of regression, sandwiched between years of progression.
