Strong centralized state and economic boom encouraged more people to go on longer journeys (better roads) Church gave pilgrims special status, special clothing, legal protection, and guaranteed hospitality which became huge expense for church. Medieval spiritual world : god is very present in world, close intimate relationship, spiritual and natural are intertwined. Purgatory: 11th century, place you went to after your died and paid for.
