Cult of saints got more popular with the veneration of martyrs - living examples of. Church tried to stop veneration of saints - christianity becomes favored religion and state religion. Desert mothers and fathers become saints - modelling their life off of christ, could not achieve torturing like martyrs, martyrdom of the senses - extreme asceticism (no sleep, no food, uncomfortable clothing, hurt themselves) Saints become venerated in specific location (location important to saint), then veneration becomes more wide spread, becomes worshipped regionally, nationally, then internationally. Hard for us today to understand medieval people.
