Document Summary
Lecture 7 sex, nation-building and nationalism (sexuality and the state) Momentous milestone events = nation building = marks of maturation of a country. Historians forgot to talk about how nation building and nationalism (sense of who we are as a nation) is linked to sex and sexuality. There is a strong connection between nationialism and sex and sexuality. Nation building and nationalism is all about building a stronger nation and a stronger national identity. In canadian history (and american) a strong nation and stronger national identity has been related to eugenics understanding that a strong nation is a white nation with a strong middle class, healthy and fit population. Eugenics is an important part of the conversation about nationalism. When talking about population growth or about what a population should look like, we are talking about sex and sexuality. Nations encourage heterosexual relations, encourage men and women to reproduce to build a strong and plentiful population.
