History 2181 lecture 8 hiv/aids and female circumcision (genital mutilation) Hiv/aids crisis of 1980/1990s: hiv = human immunodeficiency virus infection, aids = acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Can be spread in contaminated blood through blood transfusion or needles/syringes. Stage 1: hiv stage: don"t have aids yet, recognition of the compromised immune system, virus is in a dormant stage, now you can take cocktail of medicine to keep the virus in dormant stage. People lasted a few years before they got aids. People lived in this stage for decades, as long as they had access to medications. Either bc no access to meds or med stops working. The virus goes out of remission, becomes: active and fatal disease. Early 80s, many young gay men were dying of aids and didn"t realize that they already survived the hiv stage and were in aids stage. People only discovered disease once they had symptoms which is when they were in.
