Document Summary
Where modern ideas of sexuality & the body start to take shape. Up until this point, the church regulated sexuality (how, what, where, who, why) & administered punishment for not abiding those rules: the church is no longer the main influence regarding sexuality. Science takes over as the most influential discourse for regulating sexuality. Revolutionary transformation in ideas: about physiology, understanding anatomy, knowing the differences between men & women, all ideas that were understood before this point were rendered outdated. The emergence of the modern medical understanding of genitalia & sexuality. A revolutionary movement of intellectual & political change. This period can be summed up with 5 ideas : there was a new emphasis on human autonomy!!! This new emphasis on scientific inquiry & this growing mistrust of the church all led to a new discourse in medicine! Prior to the enlightenment period, the bodies of men and women were conceptualized under a one sex model.
