Muslims had a much larger geographic position (doesn"t necessarily mean more people) Reasons for the collapse of the abbasid empire. Disintegration of the abbasid empire: reasons and chronology. Beginning in the mid-9th century a slow process of change in the political structure of the middle east. First, there was an empire: umayyad dynasty, and then the abbasid dynasty ruled over a large geographical area incorporating parts of asia, Now the central administration in baghdad was slowly loosing its political power over the territories. The abbasid dynasty had a series of weak and dysfunctional rulers beginning with the mid-9th century. This pattern will occur in each and every regional state and a dynasty which replaced them. It took months to get from baghdad to central asia. Racial and linguistic diversity prevented the formation of a cultural unity. Instead unity was cemented through the religion (islam) and the religious law.
