The abbasid dynasty had a series of weak and dysfunctional rulers beginning with the mid-9th century. This pattern will occur in each and every regional state and a dynasty which replaced them. It took months to get from baghdad to central asia. Racial and linguistic diversity prevented the formation of a cultural unity. Instead unity was cemented through the religion (islam) and the religious law.
