This is interesting because victorians believed that polite society should be very discrete in discussing sexual matters. Reputation for being prude and uninterested in all things sexual. To some extent it was true they were prude about openly talking about sex. We know that they were obsessed with all thing sexual and it fascinated them. The new middle class emerged from the industrial economy they weren"t the nobility and they weren"t the very poor they were in the middle. Before the industrial rev you had the elite society and then everyone else (the masses, the working class) They were anxious to separate themselves from the working class. One way to distinguish them selves was through the ideology of separate spheres ( public sphere activities should be separate from the private sphere) public was about men and private was about women. Created to distinguish the middle class form the lower class.
