Kennedy was witty and charismatic, nixon was not. Everyone watching the debate everyone thought kennedy won. People who had listened to it they thought nixon won or it was a draw. At the time the democrats controlled both houses. The departments and agency"s held a large amount of democrats. Americans thought that america was becoming too liberal. First republican president since roosevelt to see the potential to use executive authority. He was going to recast the president, make it the centre of a growing skepticism to a growing social reform. Focus all the doubt and mold it to use power. Upset with the expansion of state and social welfare programs. Nixon saw this was there and the presidency was going to define the debate. They decided who got to see nixon.
