Great depression was a robust time in the usa: folk music dominated b/c there was a lot to sing about. Blues took on a particular political thrust: connection between folk and the blues. So he knew adversity at a young age. Dropped out of hs in the late 20s. As the depression wore on, he got caught up in the migration of the oaklies (ppl moving from oklahoma. Started out playing hillbilly music (early county) hoping to find a better life in cali) Combined experiences of his youth and the depression influenced his music: started to become politicized and class-based. Result = people who lived on the land were shafted: these are the people who made up the migration to california.
