History is written by the educated wealthy and powerful classes. History is political- the interpretation is important to those in power. The one who dominates writes history which was until recently the western white male. Women had lack of access to education, publishing rights. What is considered important in history war, inventions, politics, great artistic achievements, organized religion. The winners are telling the story or the ones on top. Impetus from womens movement of 1960s and 1970s for women"s history. The message is that the experience and history of people like you is not important when you only learn of one type of people in history. Presented to you in a neutral manner, is disempowering. How did women get in this disadvantaged position> Compensatory history accounts of women worthies" who have achieved in the same way men have. Problem with this is that it idealizes those few women who are successful in stereotypical ways in public sphere.
