What is physical activity: any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure, exercise is a subset of physical activity. The benefits of exercise: scientists have studied the effects of exercise on health and functioning for the past 40 years, found to be the most important action you can take to improve wellness. Cognitive functioning: state and trait anxiety, depression, self-esteem, mood states. Inactivity of at least 17 unhealthy conditions: obesity, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers. Exercise adherence: adherence: sticking to or faithfully conforming to a standard of behaviour in order to meet some goal. Prevalence of physical activity: approximately 47% of canadian adults are inactive, more men (55%) than women (51%) are active, globally, at least 1 in 4 adult fails to achieve the minimum recommendation of daily physical activity. What about university students: approximately 50% of north american university students are insufficiently active.
