Health Sciences 1001A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Sympathetic Nervous System, Peripheral Nervous System, Autonomic Nervous System
Document Summary
Recent meta-analysis showed it to be as effective as other kinds of traditional therapy in decreasing anxiety, stress and depression. Stressor = situation/event that triggers physical and emotional reactions. Stress = general physical and emotional state that accompanies the stress response; in common usage, refers to both stressor and stress response. The primary determinant of the health consequences of stress is how the individual responds to the stress. Responses to stressors include physical changes, and emotional and behavioural responses. Two systems control for physical response to stressors: the nervous system and the endocrine system. Autonomic nervous system is in the peripheral nervous system, is the part of the nervous system that is not under conscious supervision, and has 2 divisions: Parasympathetic division in control when you are relaxed; aids in digesting food, storing energy and promoting growth. Sympathetic division activated during times of arousal, incl exercise, and when there is an emergency i. e severe pain, anger, or fear.
