Medicalization is directly related to how health comes to be known as very individualistic. How to conceptualize the sociology of health and illness. Problems which are non-medical in character are treated and defined as medical problems: require medical intervention. Medicalization = a form of social control/regulation that involves redefining life processes and difficulties that require medical management. Note: medicalization is not always a bad thing. Pharma companies: vested interest in defining things in particular ways. In the business of making treatment drugs: a lot of capital/profit to be made in redefining everyday issues in medical terms that require drugs. Patient advocacy groups: demand for something to be recognized as a medical issue bc it gives them rights and a basis to make claims to the government for their illnesses to be covered by insurance. Health insurance companies: define what is medical issue and not. Media: women"s and men"s magazine have a lot of ideas abt ~health~
