Health Sciences 1002A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Homicide, Indian Register, Indian Act
Document Summary
Class 16: case study in the embodiment of inequity; the housing crisis in attawapiskat. Do they help us understand? (cid:523)opening line from (cid:498)finding. Health research, particularly epidemiological research, has played a role in constructing colonizing images of. Aboriginal women and communities as sick, disorganized, and dependent, reinforcing unequal power relationships and justifying ongoing paternalism and dependency in health care (browne & fiske, 2001: 129) The quotes on the previous slide serve as a reminder that we need to approach numbers and statistics with caution. Numbers are helpful to understand how suffering and disease are disproportionately experienced by different groups and populations. Numbers can be leveraged by health researchers and advocates to persuade those with authority (e. g. , government) to redistribute resources and opportunities in ways that are more equitable. However, in pointing out these statistical patterns and trends, we must take care not to homogenize the experiences of all members of groups who experience oppression.
