Infant mortality rates are good health indicators for a country if im rate is high, this means that the overall health of the country is poor. Hippocrates humoral theory of disease (the 4 humoral substances are: phlegm, blood, black bile, and yellow bile). Empirical verification (observation) became basis of scientific method. Focuses more on the body and the individual. 5 assumptions: health is biologically determined, body-as-machine, health care = curing disease, medicine is scientific, doctor is authority. Power of medical profession to control its worn work, the work of other healthcare workers, and resource allocation for healthcare. Range and hierarchy of health care workers e. g. lay healers, midwives, barber-surgeon, and apothecaries. Power, autonomy, control over health care by medicine. 3 aspects of autonomy: authority over regulation, authority of knowledge, authority to evaluate the work of others. Power of medical profession is an expression of how power is distributed in society.
