Pharmaceuticals are an essential part of modern medicine and when used appropriately can be of great value in maintaining and restoring health. The industry doesn"t stand in isolation; it is intertwined with the state through a number of relationships: the public sector does much of the basic research that leafs to the development of new medicines. Government has established a set of regulations that must be met before new medicines are allowed onto the market. Large share of money spent on prescription medicines come from the public sector. Legislation means that only select groups of processionals can prescribe medicines, and other professionals, a pharmacist, has to dispense them. Although the pharmaceutical industry is considered not a social determinant of health, it nevertheless has an important impact on the health status of canadians. Cost of prescription medications are not covered by provincial and territorial publicly funded health insurance plans.
