Document Summary

The heart is called the engine of the body. The heart is somewhat in the center of the thoracic cavity but it is not symmetrical in look or function, it points to the left and is shifted forward. The left side (red) is in the oxygenated state, the right side (blue) is in the deoxygenated state. There is always some oxygen in the blood, just much less in the oxygenated blood. Red is lots of o2, blue is lots of co2. An artery means the blood is travelling away from the heart, a vein means that blood is traveling to the heart, it has nothing to do with oxygenation and deoxygenating. Pressure from the right side of the heart pumps blood to and from the lungs. There is a gas exchange of co2 for o2. The blood pressure is 15 mmhg which is much lower than the systemic blood pressure (blood pressure of the body) which averages about 90 mmhg.
