Attempting suicide had significant consequences you could be put into prison for 5-10 years. Pierre elliot trudeau made significant changes to the criminal code. Took suicide out of the criminal code; made it legal to attempt suicide. Left the law that said if you help somebody to commit suicide, you were committing a crime. You cannot consent to having harm done to you the fact that you give them permission doesn"t make it legal. Suicide is no longer illegal, but you cannot counsel someone on how to commit suicide. Led to problems for physicians and nurses because they cannot here information about a crime; leading to the removal of the suicide aspect of the criminal code. Counsel involves listening and actively giving advice about how to commit suicide. Example: nurse telling patients to not use a specific drug because it caused significant brain damage w/o actually killing the patient. The most famous case is the sue rodriguez case.
