Without the indigenous people, the europeans would not have survived. The symbolism helps to understand the flow of the story. Powerful way to get into complicated issues that the indigenous community faces. Of indigenous peoples in canada live in cities. Colonialism was driven by economic motives and desire to expand territory. The vikings were the first, followed by the french, and then the english who were interested in the fur trade. They had to make partnerships w/ indigenous people which started off positively and changed over time. The partnership changed overtime as the europeans realized how much power they could acquire by having control over the land. Treaties (legal agreements) were designed and signed between the aboriginals and europeans. Indigenous peoples thought they were entering into an equitable treaty regarding land. Interest grew in bringing more settlers to canada, and indigenous peoples were seen as an impediment and were seen as holding canada back from becoming more modern.
