What is Gender?
• A cultural understanding of being male or female
• Differs from sex as a biological definition

• In contexts where stigmatization and violence coexist it has been demonstrated
that the perspective of the victim begins to see oneself as acquiring the labels
applied by the victimizer
• Aboriginal women accounted for 16% of female homicides and 11.3% of missing
women
o They are mostly young
o Two thirds are in BC, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan
o 85% were mothers or grandmothers
o aboriginal women and girls are as likely to be killed by an acquaintance or
stranger as the are by an intimate partner
