Childhood Development
• New evidence on the effects of early experiences on brain development, school
readiness and health in later life has sparked a growing consensus about early
child development as a powerful determinant of health
• Child development is greatly affected by their
o Housing and neighbourhood
o Family income
o Level of parents' education
o Access to nutritious foods and physical recreation
o Genetic makeup
o Access to dental and medical care
• Positive stimulation early in life improves learning, behaviour and health into
adulthood
• A loving, secure attachment between parents/caregivers and babies in the first
18 months of life helps children to develop trust, self-esteem and emotional
control
Child and Youth Network
• The Child and Youth Network (CYN) are composed of over 170 agencies and
individuals that span the education, health, recreation and social services sectors
o The CYN supports happy, healthy children and youth today

• The CYN is dedicated to helping build strong families and breaking down the
barriers that put our children, youth and families at risk
• We do this by collectively planning, facilitating collaboration, building awareness,
providing education and improving access to services
