Lecture 5 special sensory system: vision & auditory. Highly specialized pathways for interpreting signals: chemical (taste/smell), mechanical, electromagnetic, require a specialized organ. Gustation (taste: allows us to feel vibrations, heat, pain, etc. These sensations require a specialized organ to receive these sensations. One of the most important senses to human survival: most efficient way that we are able to survive in the world, over 50% of sensory receptors are in the eyes, entire cerebral lobe is devoted to visual processing. Perceive only a small portion of electromagnetic waves: visible spectrum. Eyelids: shades eyes during sleep, protects from light or objects. Palpebrae (lower and upper: upper eyelid is more mobile. Extrinsic eye muscles: eye movement, dense connective tissue under each eyelid, gives eyelid their shape, tarsal glands, conjuctiva thin mucous membrane underneath eyelid, secretes meibum traps tears, seals eyelid, palpebral, bulbar. Fact: red veins on eyeballs are due to irritation of the conjunctiva layer.
