Case study: julia has spinal muscular atrophy, a severe neurodegenerative disease. We all respond to pain differently, but policy generalizes to the entire population. It can be beyond the medical profession and it might happen more than we realize (eg. family members: medical assistance in dying (maid) It may not be the physician or nurse practitioner administering the dose, but facilitating it through prescription. It is not withdrawing or refusing life-saving treatment, and it is not the same as not being provided life saving treatment at all. Legal history: suicide was once criminal, rodriguez v. british columbia (attorney general), 1993, rodriguez had als and challenged the criminal law because she wanted to be able to make a decision about her right to e(cid:374)d her life. He (cid:449)ould(cid:374)(cid:859)t (cid:271)e a(cid:271)le to die by suicide on her own and needed someone to help her. Involved another als patient with the same argument.
