For many elective surgeries, there is a waiting time= larger prehab window. Injury-relevant processing- information about pain, extent of injury, how it happened, negative consequences. Emotional upheaval and reactive behaviour- agitation, emotional depletion, isolation, shock, disbelief, denial, self-pity. Positive outlook and coping- acceptance, coping efforts, optimism, relief with progress. Identity loss- especially if no longer able to participate. Performance decrements- less confidence, lack of practice, expectations. Most reactions are negative when getting injured you have to go through negative emotions in order to get to the positives. Under conditions where failure to meet demand has important consequences. Lots of ways stress finds its way into injury. Without prehab you"re maintaining and possibly decreasing your function. Prehab line has less time below the function level than it is for the patient not participating in prehab.
