Depression isn"t universally accepted as a disease because there is not a definitive biological test. Anxiety- unpleasant feeling state or physiological reaction that occurs when fear is provoked, trait (how one is) vs state (anxious in a specific state) Depression- charecterized as avoidance, withdrawal and diminished activity. To have depression, one must have 1 of the 2 core symptoms and 5 of the 9 other symptoms in a 2 week period in the last month. Depressed most of the day nearly every day. Diminished interest in pleasure in activities almost every day. Bipolar- alternating episodes of emotional highs and lows. Dysthima- mild depression that lasts at least two years. Postpartum- occurs in mothers after their baby is orn. Seasonal affective disorder- occurs during changing of seasons. Anxiety, substance abuse, heart disease, stroke, cancer, hiv, diabetes, parkinsons. Used to assess presence and intensity of depression. Total score rates depression by scoring intensity 0-3.
