• Measurable, observable or felt improvement in health not attrituable to
treatment
Psychological Theory
• Belief in the treatment or subjective feeling of improvement, even when told
receiving placebo
• Causes the brain to release endogenous opoids or endorphins that reduce
pain
• Showing attention and care triggers physical reactions to reduce stress and
promote healing
Knee vs Sham Surgery
• 3 courses of treatment, debridement, lavage and placebo)

• Patients who received the placebo surgery experienced the same level of
pain post-surgery as patients who received debridement or lavage
surgeries
• These pain scores lasted for up to 2 yrs
