Prediction: The role of stress in injury
Nothing more practical than theory
Williams & Andersen Model
• Potentially Stressful Athletic Situation
• Leads to Stress response
o Cognitive Appraisal of demands
▪ Demands of situation exceed ones capabilities
o Physiological/ Attentional demands
▪ Physiological- everyone has own way of responding to physiological
stress ex. tensing up, raised blood pressure
▪ Attentional- ex. Tunnel vision, not paying attention to surrounding
environment which leads to injury
• Then injury
Moderating Factors that lead to stress response
• Personality
o Over confidence or anxiousness
• History of Stressors
o Exposure to previous stressful situations can cause anxiousness and
stress
• Coping Resources
o How to deal with stress response
o Individual coping mechanisms and support from friends and family
Moderator Variable
• Quantitative variable that affects the nature, direction or strength of
relation between independent or predictor variable and dependant
variable
Study on injury prediction
• Found high correlation between stress and injury
• Method took teenage athletes from 3 different sports
• Prospective Research
o Injury that hasn’t happened yet
o Follows athletes over course of a season and identify who hurts
themselves
